As part of the Trade and Cooperation Agreement, the UK and EU have agreed a temporary 'bridging mechanism' for personal data which allows organisations to continue sharing data from the EU to the UK until 30 June 2021.

This gives organisations that had not addressed EU to UK data transfers some breathing space while the EU Commission continues its assessment of adequacy for the UK’s data protection laws.

During this extension if you receive personal data from the EU you should consider putting alternative safeguards to mitigate any potential risks of an adequacy decision not being reached. To help you understand the key issues, data protection expert, Johanna Cunningham from Arthur Cox has written a feature on the movement of data which outlines the most recent developments and key actions for local businesses.

You can also view our Frequently Asked Questions and Data Management Tutorial for more detailed information on these developments.

If you have any data management queries specific to your business, as a result of EU Exit, please book your place to speak to Johanna at our weekly advice clinic now.

The advice clinics are free to attend and are open to all NI businesses.
