About the Energy Efficiency Capital Grant

The Energy Efficiency Capital Grant (EECG) will help Northern Ireland businesses reduce energy costs and build resilience through green efficiency. EECG provides grant support to buy and install energy efficient equipment that reduces energy and carbon emissions.

This project is funded by the UK government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund.

What are the benefits of the Energy Efficiency Capital Grant?

Grants of up to £150k are available to help businesses buy and install energy efficient equipment. The rate of support covers the total eligible project costs and is based on company size:

  • Large - maximum of 30%
  • Medium - maximum of 40%
  • Small & Micro - maximum of 50%

Examples of projects that will be considered for the grant include:

  • Heating and cooling equipment
  • Motors and drives
  • Compressed air
  • Lighting
  • Onsite renewable generation

Who is eligible for the Energy Efficiency Capital Grant?

To be eligible, businesses must be:

  • a registered company based in Northern Ireland
  • trading for at least 2 years 
  • registered for business rates for the premises where the project will be implemented 
  • able to demonstrate that it has sufficient funds to cover a reimbursement grant
  • either the owner of these premises or have a long-term rental agreement 

Businesses must also provide the following documentation to support the application: 

  • 12 months of electricity/energy bills
  • the last 2 years of financial accounts

Businesses may apply for up to 3 projects (located at one site) in one single application.  

Only one entity within a group structure of companies can apply for the grant at any one time.  

Sports clubs/organisations, charities or farms are not eligible. A full list of exclusions can be found on page 3 of the EECG - Guidance Notes (PDF). 

Is my project eligible for the Energy Efficiency Capital Grant?

To be eligible, projects must:

  • have a total eligible spend of at least £4,000
  • demonstrate energy and carbon emission savings, these figures vary depending on the type of project; check guidance notes for more details 
  • achieve a payback of between 1 and 8 years. A higher payback may be allowed but these projects will require a higher level of energy and carbon savings. This is the capital cost divided by the yearly energy savings. 

Please note, any 3rd party statutory requirements such as building control, planning permission, grid connections etc. must be considered prior to applying. Check page 10 of the guidance notes for more details. 

How to apply

To find out if you can apply for the Energy Efficiency Capital Grant, check your eligibility. If you are a consultant applying on behalf of a client, please submit the business contact and the location where the project will be implemented on your application. 

 

Q1 - Are you a registered business based in Northern Ireland and trading for at least 2 years?
Q2 - How would categorise your business/business activity?
Q3 - Are the premises where the project(s) will be implemented registered as a business by Land and Property Services?

Q4 - Is your application is to fund one location for one business entity?

Up to three projects, located at one site, can be included within one application. Only one entity within a group structure of companies can apply for EECG at any one time.
Q5 - Do you own these premises, or do you have a Rental Agreement?

For businesses that do not own their premises, a Rental Agreement must be in place for where the energy efficiency technology will be installed.
Q6 - Can you provide 12 months of electricity/energy bills for the location of the project?
Q7 - Can you provide the latest 2 years of your business accounts and if applicable parent company accounts?
Q8 - Is your business is solvent and not currently in financial distress?

Credit checks will be carried out upon yourself, your directors and the company to determine if your business is eligible.
Q9 - Do you have sufficient funds to cover the full project costs?

EECG is a reimbursement grant; the applicant must complete the project and pay the costs in full. They can then submit their claim for reimbursement. When Invest NI confirms the project is complete the eligible grant amount will be paid to the applicant.
Q10 - Projects must start within 3 months of an offer being issued and must be completed within 12 months of the offer. Therefore, all permissions and requirements must be met before applying. Have you these permissions and requirements?
